Dedicated towards Irrah
She didn't make it easy to stay.
He stayed paying attention anyway.
It started with her smile. The quiet kind, the one she doesn't give away easily. Something about it makes the whole room feel different. He noticed it before anything else. He's still noticing, even now, even here.
She's already building toward it.
She's never had to wait long.
She carries it with her. She always will.
He came from somewhere heavy. When he tried to explain it, where it came from, what it cost him, she couldn't quite get there. He doesn't blame her.
She showed up wanting to laugh. He gave her something to carry instead.
The thing is, she already knew when to be serious. She knew how to pull him back when he was at his lowest. She knew how to sit in the hard parts with him. What she needed from him was simply himself. Not every weight. Not every explanation.
Just him. He understands that now.

She checked up every day.
Not because she had to. Because she wanted to.
When she was upset, she stayed quiet.
When he was upset, she joked until he was whole again.
When he told her he was working, she said keep going.
She let him into her world. Carefully.
He fell in love with the details she never thought to mention.
He was paying attention the whole time.
He finally gets it.
He's still here.
Still here.
